Arden

We walk into the day-after brunch, each of us carrying a soul-deep satisfaction that can’t be disguised. I feel it clear through to my bones, and though I can’t read these men as well as I’d like, I see . . . something.

My lovers.

We woke up in a pile of bodies, sprawled over each other like puppies that were exhausted after hours of playtime. That part was true. Sebastian had somehow ended up in the middle, True and I clinging to either side of him. Our legs were tangled, hands touching and cupping, and our breathing mingled.

I wanted to stay locked in that moment with these men. Badly. Tucked in that too-small bed. Consuming them and being consumed by them. Reliving the passion and reveling in my place between them.

For just a little longer.

I leave for home tonight. And then?

Then I will have some amazing memories. These two men gave me so much more than they can ever know.

They gave me Arden the woman.

I will never forget that.

I didn’t get the chance to give them a proper thank you. At least not yet. Reality intruded in the form of True’s alarm, and we all knew we couldn’t ignore it. This morning is the last wedding event. A brunch to say goodbye.

The M&Ms take off for their honeymoon later today. Matt booked them a special place in Tahiti, a thatched-roof hut that squats smack over the clear, turquoise water of some little bay off the Pacific Ocean. It’s private and perfect for them, and I’m only a little jealous.

I can’t even describe how wonderful a few more days in paradise would be. Especially if I could spend them with Sebastian and True in their bed. But that isn’t my reality.

I’m a new woman now, and it’s time to get on with my life.

A new life that started with that song last night.

Hero. I can be your hero, baby.

I’ve never had a hero in my life. My dad did his best, but my mom’s attitude made most things pretty impossible. Maybe, I think now, it’s better that way. I learned some things about myself that I wouldn’t have understood otherwise.

It sucked at the time, but I’m the new Arden now. The Arden created in the arms of Sebastian Calhoun and Truman Powell. This Arden discovered another, bigger truth there.

I can be my own hero.

But first, I have these last few hours in Hawaii.

I welcome True’s arm around my waist as I clutch Sebastian’s hand. We stop just inside the entry to the lanai. It’s the same location that’s been the gathering place for many of the wedding events. It’s decorated with a much more placid, Hawaiian welcome this morning. Round tables are covered by white tablecloths, small tropical flower arrangements decorate the middle of each, while baskets of mini-muffins and carafes of coffee invite guests to indulge in a quick, morning snack.

A breakfast buffet stretches along one wall. The choices are plentiful. Scrambled eggs, an omelet station, bacon, sausage, and huge bowls of fruit.
